“Keeping our schools and state on the path of success requires making hard choices and putting our children first. Thank you to Governor O’Malley and the legislators who stood up, stopped the doomsday budget, and protected Maryland’s great schools, vital services, and excellent quality of life.” Maryland State Education Association President Clara Floyd at the close of the 2012 special session.
As a son of teachers, the value of education was instilled in me at an early age. We need quality education in our communities to provide opportunity, increase our competitiveness, and drive innovation and entrepreneurship. We’re currently facing a budget crisis in Montgomery County, but cutting education funding is not the solution to our budgetary challenges. Like many people, I believe that education is an investment in the future of our communities and we should avoid cuts at all costs. That’s why during the 2012 special session I voted to protect education funding by stopping the doomsday cuts.
