Lesley Lopez to Slate with the D39 Team

Senator Nancy J. King and Delegates Kirill Reznik and Shane Robinson announced on June 23rd that Lesley J. Lopez, will be joining the State Legislative District 39 Team Slate for the upcoming primary election in June of 2018.

Years of working on legislation in Congress and for nonprofits have given Lesley a qualified perspective on how to work together to solve problems. Her successful career in advocacy lead her to be part of the strategic teams fighting for comprehensive immigration reform, voting rights protections, and the roll out and defense of the Affordable Care Act. She is also a faculty member at the George Washington University, where she is a proud SEIU 500 member.

Senator Nancy King said, “Lesley impressed us immediately with her background in public service, but it was her role as former Director of Communications for the National Immigration Forum and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, along with her own family’s experiences that assured me she understands the issues that so many of our District 39 residents are facing. Ms. Lopez has a strong desire to serve and will be an asset to District 39 and a strong advocate for all Maryland residents.”

Delegates Reznik and Robinson echoed the Senator’s enthusiastic support by saying, “There are many qualified individuals who have expressed their desire to serve in District 39, but Lesley brings to our team a wealth of experience on county, state, federal and international issues.” Delegate Reznik pointed to Ms. Lopez’s progressive ideas on health care and public safety and Delegate Robinson noted her passion for finding a long term fix to transportation issues that balances transit needs with environmental concerns.

“It has been such an honor to serve my community on the Montgomery County Board of Social Services, fight for social justice on the board for NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland and grow the local Democratic party as a precinct chair. I’m ready to apply my federal and local experiences to take the next step in public service, and use the skills I learned in Emerge to help our D39 team run through the tape next June. With the list of rights to protect growing longer every day, we have a responsibility to ensure we don’t set the clock back to a bygone era when inequality was the norm,” said Lesley.
